Improving my pronunciation of sounds (word endings)

I am often asked by students what a good warm up exercise is to improve their pronunciation of sounds at the ends of words.

Speakers of Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and other languages of South East Asia often have some difficulty pronouncing sounds clearly at the ends of their words.

I often find students can repeat single words correctly with correct endings but when they speak in phrases or sentences they drop some sounds at the ends of their words.

So – how can we improve this! Firstly, it is great that you are making sounds correctly at the ends of words in single words. What you need to do now is practice adding a word after the target word.

So for example, if you are practising the words

wait                 and                  gate

Practice each of them and check you are getting a good /t/ ending. Then practice them with another word after – making excellent /t/ sounds.

For example

wait after             and                  gate after

Practice all the words in the course with words like these after the target words.

Then when you are very good at this, add another word.

For example

wait after late                         gate after late.

It doesn’t matter if they don’t make sense – they are for practice and for exercising your mouth – so it does not matter if they are not meaningful sentences.

Every morning, practice this sentence out loud 10 times. Do it slowly and make sure you get good word endings every time.

I look at a pink pot.

Do that every morning for 5 days and then say the following:

I look at a pink pot and a rat on a mat.

After that, change the phrases and insert words that you need to use often. For example, words like ‘work’, ‘walk’, ‘take’, ‘part’ etc etc.

Mispronouncing sounds at the ends of words makes your English unclear and also negatively affects your grammar (past tense endings and plural endings).

With a Star Pronunciation course you will learn how to pronounce word endings correctly in words, phrases and sentences . You can enrol and start improving now.
